The deadline to protest your taxes is May 16th. Save money on your property taxes by protesting that your home is not being overvalued. Begin by taking pictures of your home and or reach out to a home contractor who can inspect your home for effects of a rotten roof or an exterior that needs painting. Also, be sure to get in touch with your local realtor to run a market analysis of homes similar to yours that have sold in the last year. On the day of your protest appointment, have a written outline, and state your case of how and why you have arrived at your new value. Your county's tax appraisers will show you the reasons why they decided on their value, yet if your house does need work, they will reduce the price. Now, if you are not happy with this new value, you can attend the additional hearing. This new hearing will be a meeting with your county's appraisal representatives. The representatives will state their claim, and then give you 15 minutes to put your claim and argument together for presentation. If you argue well, you can have your taxes reduced, yet it may be in your best interest to have a professional on your side such as a realtor or real estate attorney. Lastly, you can also have your property taxes reduced by making sure you have a homestead exemption.
